California Proposition
65 and
Warnings about Lindane
Attorney Shawn Khorrami's
actions may help protect
Californians against lindane
The February 2, 1998 issue of Drug Topics reported that a
number of independent and chain pharmacies in California
have received letters from attorney Shawn Khorrami
regarding possible violations of a California law
affecting lindane products.
Proposition 65 requires that consumers be notified
whenever they are exposed to any kind of product with an
ingredient that has been shown to be toxic or
carcinogenic. Attorney Shawn Khorrami's office is
interpreting the law to mean that everyone along the line
of distribution needs to give notice to the patient. John
Cronin of the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA)
suggests that the more appropriate entity to give the
warnings is the manufacturers and/or physicians that
prescribe the drug. The National Pediculosis Association
position is that lindane should be banned from human use
altogether! If you are interested in more information
about Proposition 65 and lindane, contact Khorrami's
office directly at 310-473-8899.
