Not only did California become the first state in the union to
ban lindane
for use for lice and scabies, but now it also appears that the California Department of
Health is the first to advocate a statewide policy emphasizing removal of lice
and nits as the most important lice control measure.
Stan Husted, MPH., Senior Public Health Biologist in Vector-Borne Disease, reports
that combing of all lice and nits is the treatment of choice for parents.
The guidelines emphasize the responsible use of treatment products and thorough daily removal of lice and their eggs (nits).
This public health standard comes just after a recent study published in the December
issue of the British Medical Journal providing the evidence that combing is
superior to visual examination for accurately identifying head lice infestations
as early as possible.
