Congratulations on your MVP2 award and Happy Pollution Prevention Week!

Your commitment to reducing lindane at the source represents a unique and innovative approach to protecting the environment.  Lindane is a persistent bio-accumulative and toxic chemical that is dangerous to the environment, harmful to human health and threatening to the food chain.  I was appalled to learn that Lindane is still used to treat head lice.

Your Lindane Usage Reduction Project is an outstanding example of how health and the environment can be protected in a sustainable and economically responsible way.  I am glad that the District of Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation and the National Pediculosis Association are working with the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable to protect the environment by preventing pollution at the source.

As a former Mayor of San Francisco, I am well aware that the most clever and unique approaches to environmental protection are often developed at the local level.  Your project certainly continues in that tradition and I look forward to seeing the Lindane Usage Reduction Program implemented not only in Long Beach and Burbank but in the rest of the state and country as well.

Keep up the great work!

National Pollution Prevention Roundtable
2001 Awards Ceremony
Washington, D.C.

Dear Friends:

Congratulations to all participants of the 2001 National Pollution Prevention Roundtable award ceremony.

In particular I want to recognize the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation, and the National Pediculosis Association on being awarded the First Place Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Award.

Their work to rid California's water supply of harmful toxins has resulted in stronger health protections for the people of our state.  In addition, their efforts will result in a cleaner, healthier environment, thus helpinf to ensure the continued success of California's thriving fishing and tourism industries.

Again, thanks to this year's winners and the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable for your hard work and dedication.  Best wishes for a delightful evening.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
